From the Tara River to the Adriatic Coast

27/07/2019
Hi, it's Eleanor!

Today we made the journey from the north of Montenegro to the Adriatic Coast, where we’re spending the next two nights. We started the day with a buffet breakfast and had some delicious traditional Montenegrin doughnuts smothered in honey. We wrote a thank you card to the owners of the rafting centre and were in a minibus on our way out of the centre by 10:30. Our journey involved some of us playing games with headbands and a geography trivia game, which I was terrible at, but got very competitive, with everyone screaming the answers over each other. Tory beat the rest of us by a mile (at the game, not the screaming!).

We arrived in Podgorica at about two and abandoned Alice and Ellie to guard all the bags at the bus station whilst the rest of us went to a nearby shopping centre and looked around. We bought wraps and fillings for our lunch, and had to fashion a table out of a bench at the station so we could make and eat the wraps.

When the bus for Tivat came, we all eagerly climbed aboard, relieved to be getting out of the heat. Unfortunately, to our horror, the bus's air conditioning was broken so it was even hotter inside the bus. So for the next two hours we all slowly roasted inside the metal box, but we had lovely views of the sea and of the town of Budva, although it was little consolation for the amount of sweat we were producing. Upon arriving at Tivat, it was then a 30 minute walk to the hostel up a very steep hill with our huge rucksacks, which was definitely a workout. When we arrived at the hostel, some of us bonded with the cats, and the others ran away screaming when they got close. Our rooms were nice, and we didn't have to share with anyone, but there were no railings on the bunk beds, so some of us feared for our lives that night! After checking out the rooms, we went down to the marina to find some dinner. The marina was much busier than expected, and we met a Serbian scouting group from Nis! They have very kindly offered to host us if we ever returned to Serbia, although they won’t be home from their trip in time to see us when we go back to Niš for the day on Tuesday. We went to a lovely restaurant and ordered two huge pizzas between 5 of us, and a little margarita pizza for Annie. The leaders shared two pizzas between them.

We then walked around the marina, and checked out all the multi-million dollar yachts, knowing that we will never be able to set foot on anything like them, never mind owning one. Some of us bought delicious but really expensive ice cream from a posh ice cream shop, whereas others bought cheaper but equally as nice ice cream from a little cart outside the restaurants. We walked back to the hostel and went to sleep at about 1:00. Luckily, none of us fell off our bunk bed during the night! Tomorrow we’re going to Kotor, where the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
